They say that laughter is key to a great relationship - I've never seen a couple laugh as much as Sarah and Brian do. It is contagious! They have the most amazing time together and are so much fun to be around. Here's a bit about what they about their relationship:
How They Met...
"Brian and I had our first date in June of 2009 at Tres Margaritas in Belmar, Colorado. Over margaritas and queso we discussed life, travel & food, especially LAMB. I may not have admitted it then, but I knew he was a KEEPER! We spent the next month getting to know each other and eating AMAZING food.
In August of that year, I left for Hong Kong for my semester abroad. During that time Brian and I talked via Skype and email. During the summer Brian had been planing a trip of his own throughout Southeast Asia--how perfect is that? We met in Hong Kong and saw the city together. Then Brian flew off to Bangkok, Thailand (I had to stay for classes) The following week I met him in Phuket, Thailand for a few days on the beach, riding elephants and eating fried lemongrass! After Thailand we flew into Cambodia. We traveled the city via Tuktuk Taxi and explored Ankor Wat. I flew back to Hong Kong for classes and Brian was off to India and United Arab Emerites (Dubai). We had so many extrodinary experiences in just or first 6 months as a couple--we couldn't wait to be living in the same country.
As I came home and finished my last quarter at DU Brian and I transitioned into being a full time, living in the same city, everyday couple. We adjusted quite well!
In June I graduated from the University of Denver with a BSBA in Hospitality Management. I was so grateful for all of my family's continued support and the huge understanding of Brian when I couldn't go out for weeks on end when I was studying for exams or preparing for group presentations. :) As a wonderful surprise Brian had planned a 10 day trip for us to Central America.
We flew from Denver to Houston, Tx and then on to Guatemala City. We drove into Antigua, Guatemala for 4 days of active volcano climbing, winery touring and coffee plantation drinking. All of our favorite things in one country! We explored the only winery in Guatemala! We traveled by bus north in to Tekal to see the ruins there. It was beautiful. We really wish we would have had more of an opportunity to see it! Brian and I were both so sick the entire time we were there. :( Neither of us had ever gotten sick while in Asia, but 4 days into our trip in Central America we are both sicker than dogs! I guess we got a little cocky, but those FROZEN Mint Margaritas were so good. (Neither of us have the stomach for mint flavored anything now!)
After our adventures in Guatemala, we flew into the beautiful, scuba paradise of Belize. Neither of us are scuba certified, but we were so looking forward to some beach time and clear ocean waters. As we recovered from our ‘digestive issues’ we actually were able to enjoy our time there. We scheduled a charter out to the sting-ray highway and were able to snorkel with them and giant turtles. My Dad always tells the story of my mother and their snorkeling experience in Maui, HI. I can totally relate now--Brian kept looking at me through snorkeling goggles and shaking his head. He had NO IDEA what I was talking about or if I was talking at all, all he heard were garbled, sucking and splashing sounds as I was pointing out different things in the water. I am my mother’s daughter! :) (I love you Mom!). We spent the rest of the trip roaming around the lazy town, eating local foods and drinking beers on the beach.
So, that was just our first year together!! Now you can only imagine how our life went the next 4 years! We have had such an amazing opportunity to explore the world, culture, and cuisines together."
How He Proposed...
"IT WAS A COMPLETE SURPRISE!!!
Brian is the man of my dreams. There is always talk when a woman is of a certain age or at the right time in her life when she fantasizes about how she will be proposed to.
- Get my father’s permission.
- Get down on one knee.
- Use my full name.
- Make sure someone is there to photograph it
- Make it a surprise.
Check, Check, Check, Check, Check, Check!
He did it ALL -- and more. He asked permission from both of my Parents, my Sister, my Gramma, and my Godfather! He sent out invitations to a surprise engagement party! He cooked all of the food with the help of both of our families. HE IS AMAZING!
I thought we were going to have dinner with friends. I went over early to get ready with Shanna, while the boys fixed a “plumbing problem”. I put on my favorite dress and even wore mascara and lip gloss! Shanna and I went to Happy Hour at the Cheesecake Factory. I noticed she was a bit more chatty than normal, but I was so excited to be relaxing and visiting with her that I didn’t even care. On the drive back to the house to “pick up” Brian and Jaime for dinner we even talked about how it wasabout time Brian asked me to marry him! Little did I know all of the planning that was going on right under my nose!
I walk into the house and Shanna disappears!! I come around the corner looking for her and come into the living room and see not only Shanna, but Brian down on one knee with both of our families standing behind him! I immediately started crying--I was so happy! He used my full name and asked if I would marry him! OF COURSE I WILL!!
*He was so nervous he tried to put the ring on the wrong hand! Honestly, I didn’t care I was just so happy. But his Mom came right over and put it on the correct hand! Thanks, Mom!
We spent the rest of the evening celebrating with our family and friends. They had the whole house decorated. Brian had orchestrated the whole thing--what an amazing team he had behind him! I didn’t have a clue. It was the most perfect proposal ever!"
